Desperate measures. A {growtoon}

What in the world is a {growtoon}?

Welcome to a new way to engage and have some fun on {grow} — a regular social media cartoon feature.

It’s an idea I’ve been kicking around for some time — finding a fun new way to communicate, entertain and engage. Why not a cartoon?  Certainly something different for the blog community.

It’s also an opportunity to highlight an emerging talent.  Over several months, Joey Strawn and I have been looking for ways to collaborate and this seemed to be a perfect match. Joey is a social media whiz and a humorist who has been using cartoon strips to illustrate his own blog.  He’ll be providing cartoons on a regular basis as the newest contributor to {grow}.

As always, we would love to have your feedback in the comment section.

  • Love this idea Mark! I originally found Joey’s blog because I saw one of his drawings and couldn’t stop smiling. Now I’m a regular reader over at Joey’s place!

  • I hope this will be a popular feature! I love his talent and am excited to give it a showcase.

I love social comment through witty cartoons. This will make a great addition to Grow. Looking forward to the continuing evolution. You have a good blog and it’s just getting better.

  • Cool collaboration you two. Joey’s cartoons are funny as hell, as showcased by the EmuMail above 🙂 lol

  • Love it when two people I enjoy reading collaborate. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

  • @businessesgrow:disqus Good idea in my opinion, love to see more spices in this blog 🙂

  • Hi @businessesgrow:disqus , like it a lot. Reminds me a bit of what Peter @Marketingm8:disqus is doing with his Social Media Satire, which I find equally funny.

Looking forward to more for sure! 🙂

  • HA HA I love this!!!! Good job @businessesgrow:disqus @joey_strawn:disqus

  • I’ve had the pleasure of knowing @joey_strawn:twitter for a while now. I’m glad that others are getting the benefit of meeting him here. I’m sure everyone will love him!

p.s. When did Disqus start integrating a feature similar to Livefyre with the Twitter handles?

  • Oh, I LOVE this! Nice job, @joey_strawn:disqus !

  • I know, I just noticed that too! I think maybe @livefyre:twitter has ’em on their toes…?

  • What a great idea – you always have something interesting going on!

  • I have now become completely inept at commenting…in terms of the tool (and hopefully not the content:)

This new feature has me completely discombobulated! My “at” symbols are jumping into text at random places, and I have no idea if I’m commenting as myself or Big Bird or Jack Sparrow.

I feel like I just got sent back to kindergarten.

  • Mark, love the idea of cartoons! Now if I can just get a handle on this new disqus feature that’s totally bumming me out, I’ll be a happy camper.

  • Brilliant idea! I’m glad you and Joey have found something fun to collaborate on. I look forward to more {grow}toons.

  • Joey Strawn

Ae well they should, @livefyre:twitter is awesome. Thanks you guys for the kind words!

  • Joey Strawn

Thanks Stephanie! I really appreciate the kind words, you’re making me blush.

  • Joey Strawn

Aww, thank you, Jennifer. You’re pretty awesome yourself. : )

  • Joey Strawn

Glad you like the cartoons. Thanks!

  • I’ve loved @ae1025cdf5d57d5aeb5d939434ca370d:disqus since first ‘meeting’ him here in {grow}’s Comment Stream months ago. He signed his comment “Joey’s Mom” – and while the relevance of that escapes me now, it showed an intelligent humour that never ceases to capture my attention and make my heart melt.

He’s also a Master of Metaphor and Analogy. In short, an English Major’s dream. Congratulations Joey! Can’t wait to see your rendition of
    @businessesgrow:disqus
in his Viking gear, drinking beer and eating pork …

  • Mead, actually.

  • Believe it or not this new comment feature surprised me too! I think it’s a good thing.

Kaarina and other confused community members — just type the comment the same. If you want to refer to somebody and let them know you mentioned them, simply type the @ symbol in front of their name and usually it works pretty well. Sorry for any confusion!

  • Joey Strawn

haha, it’s like you read my mind. : )

  • Joey Strawn

Dino, thank you. I really appreciate you saying that. You rock!

  • Joey Strawn

Thanks, Leo. I’m looking forward to making more. : )

  • Joey Strawn

Thanks Aaron, I really appreciate that.

  • Joey Strawn

Yeah, we had been looking for a way to work together for a while and this just seemed like a perfect fit. Thanks!

  • Joey Strawn

I’m hoping it turns out to be a great column here on {grow}. Thanks for the kind words. : )

  • I love this idea gents – this is a creative way to communicate a message and it should be lot’s of fun!

Start cranking out some cartoons Joey!

  • Great idea..so many blogs are serious all the time. It’s good to mix it up a bit.

  • Now aren’t you clever?! I would never have thought Emu. My pigeon still hasn’t returned with the iPad!

  • Love it! Looking forward to more of it!

Love the cartoon. Great idea! This one reminds me of the days before the web when, as a freelancer, I used “FordNet” – I drove over to my clients’ offices in my ford Taurus with documents on floppy disks.

  • Joey Strawn

I’m a machine! You’ll get your comics, Mark Harai, keep your pants on. : )

  • Joey Strawn

    Nice!

  • Joey Strawn

Thanks Ashleigh, I’m looking forward to drawing more for you. : )

  • Joey Strawn

That’s why you never use Bill’s PigeonPad.

  • Joey Strawn

Thanks Jackie, we’re hoping it’ll be good for some laughs.

  • Well, Joey, the thing is, I always figured they were reliable birds. I mean, after all, Google uses them. You’ve surely hear of Google PigeonRank, right?
    REF: http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html

Oh, and look at how well they served Mike Tyson’s career! He started fighting because some bully killed his pigeon. It led him to earning squillions of dollars beating people up.:-D

  • In all honesty – Joey’s sketches don’t stand a chance in front of my hairless, ear-less, nose-less stick figure men!!! Muwahaha 😉

You know you rock Joey and that I LOVE your cartoon art.
It’s fantastic that you two will be collaborating – woohoo.
It still amazes me what the blogging world keeps doing for us.
I’ll be looking forward to what 2 of my favorite bloggers have in store for us with their new creative communication styles.

    Rock on!
    Cheers

PS – Joey – remember that if you need my wise words of “wtf and whatever’s” in the sketches, I”m here for ya lol.
