Your 2012 Marketing Plan: Tell Me What to Do
Jan 5th
The ever-awesome Mitch Joel wrote a dizzying blog post forecasting that 2012 is The Year of More.
He points out that 2012 will be a year of technological and information abundance:
- Social sharing will intensify and choices will multiply
- The marketing stage — even for small businesses — will be more global
- The opportunity to target in a hyper-local way will create an unprecedented push of “deals”
- Devices are still multiplying, not consolidating
- Brands will be fighting hard to connect with us more directly and more personally
- Sorting through the information density today is difficult and becoming impossible.
Mitch is right of course (just don’t tell him that I said so). But here is the grand irony. All of these trends fly directly in the face of what consumers really need right now.
We need LESS.
Consumers are paralyzed by choice and overwhelmed by information density. I just viewed a TV ad for something called Deal Chicken. I thought, does the world really need another freaking way to get coupons? We can’t handle the number of deals we’re already getting!
Time-starved consumers just want to be told what to do. How do I save time? How do I save money? How can I have more fun? Just tell me. I don’t need to sift through 1 billion results on Google. I have far too much choice. I just want to know.
Isn’t it ironic that companies like Facebook and Google are collecting so much information about us to presumably make our decision-making more streamlined and efficient? Does anybody feel that their information flow is more streamlined today?
Mitch is right. 2012 will be the Year of More. But that is in direct opposition to what consumers need. There’s a business opportunity in there somewhere, isn’t there? How are you helping your customers sort through complexity? How will you tell them what to do?
Social Slam Reveals Spring Surprises
Sep 13th
In 2011, Social Slam set the standard for a value-oriented, first-class social media conference. We featured speakers from around the country including Jay Baer, CK Kerley and Brian Winter.
More than 95% of the 430 attendees gave the conference a “satisfied” or “very satisfied” rating and many people claimed it was the best conference they had ever attended.
How are we going to top that?
We have a number of surprises to reveal over the coming months, but today, we would like to announce our first keynote speaker for the April 27, 2012 conference in Knoxville, TN: Mitch Joel!
Mitch is one of the most important and influential leaders in the field of social media marketing. When Google wanted to explain online marketing to the top brands in the world, they brought Mitch Joel to the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. Marketing Magazine dubbed him the “Rock Star of Digital Marketing” and called him, “one of North America’s leading digital visionaries.” Most recently, Mitch was named one of iMedia’s 25 Internet Marketing Leaders and Innovators in the world.
He is president of digital agency Twist Image, with offices in Montreal and Toronto. His book, Six Pixels of Separation, was one of the seminal books in the field and still one of the most-acclaimed and best-selling of all-time.
His blog is in the AdAge Power 50 marketing blogs of the world and his podcast regularly features the most famous authors, consultants and pioneers in the field of marketing.
But wait … there’s more.
To uphold Social Slam’s vision of creating a national event that showcases the brightest NEW voices in the field, we are creating several innovative panels and “slams” that will put a spotlight on up and coming thinkers in social media marketing. If you’re interested in applying, please visit the Social Slam website and fill out an application before the end of October!
We have two more national-level keynote speakers already booked and there will be more announcements on that in coming weeks!
Tickets will go on sale December 01. Last year, the ticket capacity of 430 was sold out weeks before the event. This year, the maximum attendance has been capped at 600 but we are still expecting a sell-out so plan to get your tickets early for this premier social media networking event!
By the way, this is an all-volunteer event run by the Social Media Club of Knoxville, which is why we can keep the prices under $100 per ticket. It is a great gathering place for the {grow} community and I look forward to seeing you there in April!
Power, influence and the social web
Jul 31st
Mitch Joel hosted me on his excellent Six Pixels of Separation podcast this week and I’m really proud of this content. I think you’ll love this lively discussion! It’s a pretty wide-ranging look at power and influence on the social web …
- Is there true power in reciprocity on the social web? Why is the power of favors toxic?
- Why are new power brokers emerging who have little real business experience? What is the source of that power?
- What are the dangers and possible advantages of the “social proof” that occurs through badges like the number of Twitter followers and Klout scores?
- How does power result in new monetization models?
- Can anybody disagree with Chris Brogan and not get blasted by his followers?
Any way, it was a lot of fun and I would love your feedback, either here, or on Mitch’s blog.

Are you ready for the Social Boom?
Apr 2nd
When it comes to practical sales and marketing advice, nobody does it better than Jeffery Gitomer. He’s written more than 10 best-selling books and now I’m part of his latest one!
Last year, Jeff approached me about contributing to a book he was authoring about Social Media and business. What a great opportunity to work with a legend! The result was published this week: Social BOOM!: How to Master Business Social Media to Brand Yourself, Sell Yourself, Sell Your Product, Dominate Your Industry Market, Save Your Butt, … and Grind Your Competition into the Dirt
The book has DEBUTED as the number one Internet marketing book on Amazon! Talk about sales power.
My chapter is called The Three Things Businesses Totally Miss About Twitter, but if you’re bored with me, you can also find amazing authors like Mitch Joel, Julien Smith and Andy Sernovitz among the pages. It is a very cool, high-energy, practical book about using social tools to gain competitive advantage.
I’m even on the cover. It’s tiny, but the most important thing is that my picture is the same size, and at the same level as Mitch Joel. If you have followed this blog for awhile you know that Mitch and I have a friendly rivalry so while I’m honored to be part of the book, I’m quite pleased that Mitch didn’t one-up me on the cover. In fact, am I imagining this, or is my picture slightly HIGHER than Mitch’s?
Any way, let’s leave it at this. For the first five people who confirm in the comment section that, in fact, my picture is higher than Mitch’s (thus permanently establishing my social media superiority over him), I will send you a free copy of the book!
Note: I know that humor sometimes does not translate well across cultures so let me state plainly that my comments about Mitch Joel are meant to be playful. He is a wonderful professional and probably my favorite blogging intellect at the moment.
