Dave Kerpen had just come off the stage at SXSW 2012 when I caught him for this interview. A fellow McGraw-Hill author of the best-selling book Likeable Social Media (affiliate link), Dave is a founder of the New York-based firm of the same name.

In this short video interview Dave discusses his ideas about five of the most important aspects of social media marketing success.

  • I personally feel the basic idea behind social media is “building relationship” with other people and that’s what all businesses have to do only then they can get success. By simply posting new offers and promotions, you can’t expect any lead.

  • Agreed with your point, I have read somewhere that while working on social media  marketing you should focus 80% on engagement and rest 20% on promotion. That helps you to expose your brand positively.

  •  Yeah, it’s certainly where the social part plays in. I’ve worked at companies which wanted to use Facebook, Twitter, et al, as simply another promotional tool. Believe it or not, there was some backlash.

  • I had 10,000 things I should be doing just now, all right, maybe just a couple dozen, but I knew listening to two forces of nature, you and Dave Kerpen, would be worthwhile. It was a great interview. Not the questions, of course, Mark, but David’s cogent answers. He has a wonderful grasp of what it takes to succeed in SM and I’m already thinking about how I can perform better in one of the five areas he brought up, Damn, I’m lucky he didn’t run through all 18.
