Extreme content marketing with Julien Smith

How do you cut through the content marketing clutter?

“Get drunk — very drunk — come up with the craziest idea you can. Then, write about it. This really works.”

Well, at least that’s the advice of Julien Smith, one of the brightest and most provocative writers, intellects, and innovators on the social web today.  He’s perhaps best known as a pioneering podcaster and blogger, the co-author of a couple of books with Chris Brogan (including the seminal Trust Agents), and the mind behind the best-selling book The Flinch.

I’ve long-admired Julien and on my recent trip to his home town of Montreal I was pleased to be able to have breakfast with this amazing guy. We talked about “pushing content to the edge” and he was gracious enough to hang around for a short video interview where we explored some of the ideas from our conversation, including staying centered when the haters show up and Julien’s 10-10-10 rule about handling content risk.

In this short video, Julien also talks about his latest venture, Breather — a rent-as-you-go place to relax and work in large cities. Be sure to check out this interview and let me know what you think about his ideas in the comment section below.

  • Great interview and the ‘get drunk’ advice is a concept that I will try soon. Are you supposed to write the article while drunk (that would be interesting!) 🙂

  • Wow. Really cool stuff from Julien. Great interview, Mark. Love the Flinch concept. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt that. And, every time I feel it and move forward, good things happen. Pushing past fear is hard, but necessary.

And Breather is such a cool concept! Looking forward to seeing how that progresses.

  • Worked for Hemingway : )

  • Thanks Laura. Was so awesome spending time with Julien.

Great video Mark, I know that Flinch feeling too well as I step towards my new venture. I have had to embrace the fear but Julien thank you I will think ahead now and run into the fear. Love the Breather idea guess it will be a while before it hits Wales Mark? x

  • Great interview. I’ve done The Flinch, including the crazy cold showers, and it definitely changes your perspective! Can’t wait to see what comes out of the Breather experiment…it seems like a weird/good idea. Or is that good/weird?

  • Gweird. Also, exciting. : )

  • Super smart guy.
